Darkly Dreaming Dexter is a 2004 novel by Jeff Lindsay, the first in his series about forensic analyst/serial killerDexter Morgan. It formed the basis of the Showtime television series Dexter and won the 2005 Dilys Award and the 2007 Book to TV award.
Plot[edit]
The novel's protagonist, Dexter Morgan, works for the Miami-Dade Police Department as a forensicblood spatter analyst. In his spare time, Dexter is a serial killer who kills murderers, rapists, child molesters and other undesirables that he believes the legal system has failed to stop. Dexter's murders are directed by an inner voice that he refers to as 'The Dark Passenger', which keeps prodding Dexter to satisfy his homicidal urges on a regular basis. Once he has done so, the voice is placated for a while, but it always eventually comes back.
Flashbacks reveal that his foster father, an esteemed police detective named Harry Morgan, recognized early on that Dexter was a violent sociopath with an innate need to kill, and taught him how to kill people who had gotten away with horrific crimes as a way to channel his homicidal urges in a 'positive' direction. Harry also taught the boy to be a careful and meticulous killer, to leave no clues, and to be absolutely sure that his victims were guilty before killing them. Dexter calls these rules 'The Code of Harry.'
Dexter succeeds in managing his double life until he investigates the 'Tamiami Slasher,' who has murdered three prostitutes. Dexter's adoptive sister, Deborah, who's also on the force and wants to be promoted to Homicide — and knowing that her brother has eerie 'hunches' — asks him for help in solving the case. Dexter eventually decides to help Deborah due to his moral code, but still feels a compelling pull to the killer, due to similar desires. After a lucid dream, Dexter drives around Miami and spots a refrigerated truck. When he follows the truck, the killer throws a severed head in his car.
The killer begins sending messages to Dexter, who finds the crimes fascinating. Dexter is torn between helping Deborah and allowing the killer to continue his spree. Meanwhile, due to his strange dreams, Dexter wants to kill somebody, so he follows a man whom he suspects of raping and killing five teenage girls and kills that man after confirming his guilt. The Tamiami Slasher kidnaps Deborah and brings Dexter to the scene, revealing that his sister is being held in the same shipping container that Dexter's mother, Laura, was held in. The killer is Dexter's biological brother, Brian, who was separated from Dexter after their mother's murder at the hands of a drug dealer. As Deborah's spiteful colleague, Migdia LaGuerta, arrives on the scene, Brian is disappointed that Dexter refuses to kill Deborah. Dexter allows Brian to kill LaGuerta and helps him escape, out of a sense of familial loyalty. In the epilogue, Dexter stands at LaGuerta's funeral and feels sad, but cannot bring himself to cry.
Award[edit]
Darkly Dreaming Dexter won the 2005 Dilys Award presented by the Independent Mystery Booksellers Association.[1]
Television series adaptation[edit]
The novel is the basis for a TV series on the cable network Showtime. Whereas the first season largely followed the plot of the original book, subsequent seasons featured original storylines not directly based on subsequent 'Dexter' novels.
Darkly Dreaming Dexter was also featured on an episode of Booked, a Canadian television series that investigates crime fiction novels through the eyes of real forensic science experts.[2]
In popular culture[edit]
In Episode 2 of the fifth season of the TV series Billions, Charles “Chuck” Rhoades, is in a session with a therapist.[3] When prompted by the therapist to choose a 'wise person', Rhoades, an avid reader of crime fiction, nominates Dexter's father, Harry Morgan, for guidance.[4]

Skydive Finger Lakes offers tandem skydiving to introduce first time skydivers to the world of skydiving. Tandem skydiving allows you to experience the thrill of skydiving with no prior experience required!
When you make a tandem jump at Skydive Finger Lakes, you can rest assured that you are jumping with some of the industry's most experienced instructors at New York's longest established skydiving center.
Conveniently located in the heart of the beautiful Finger Lakes region of NY, we are the closest skydiving center to Ithaca, and within easy reach of Syracuse, Rochester, Binghamton, and Auburn. There is no better place to experience the breathtaking beauty of Upstate New York than Skydive Finger Lakes.
So what are you waiting for? Skydiving New York has never been easier or more convenient!
WHAT TO EXPECT
Following a short instructional session, we will fly you to an altitude of 10,000 feet where your skydiving adventure begins. During the flight you will be flying over Lake Seneca and Lake Cayuga with the most amazing views of at least 6 of the Finger Lakes as well as Lake Ontario. Harnessed to your own personal skydiving instructor, the door will open and you will position yourself in the door and prepare to exit the aircraft. When you are at the door it will be windy and you will probably be thinking to yourself, 'What am I doing?!' as you have your legs outside the aircraft- but you won't be looking down and worrying, you'll be snug against your instructor's shoulder and looking up at the wide blue sky. Then you and your instructor will leave the aircraft and experience the thrill of 30 or more seconds of free fall. The words on this website cannot possibly describe the incredible sensation of floating at 120 miles per hour. You just have to give it a try and experience the rush for yourself. At around 5,000 feet your instructor will deploy the parachute open. Your instructor will fly you around, or let you fly the parachute on a 5-minute canopy ride back to the landing area while you enjoy spectacular views of the Finger Lakes.
SKYDIVING AGE & WEIGHT RESTRICTIONS
You must be 18 years of age or older and weigh less than 210 pounds. You must be in reasonable physical condition and not extremely overweight. We will consider students up to 235 pounds on a case by case basis, and there is an additional charge of $2 per pound over 210. Skydiving does not require great physical strength, but precision and technique. (This should go without saying, but men and women can participate equally.)
WHAT TO WEAR, WHAT TO BRING?
Clothes:
Use common sense and dress for the weather of the day: you will be spending time in the great outdoors. We recommend athletic-appropriate gear like leggings or track pants, but jeans are usually fine if they aren't too restrictive and it isn't too hot! Shorts are okay as long as they aren't too short- you don't want them riding up under the harness or during your grass landing. Tee shirts are usually fine during the summer, but no tank tops or sleeveless shirts!
Jumpsuits are available but are not recommended in the summer, so prepare to jump in what you're wearing. We will provide you with goggles to protect your eyes.
Glasses and contacts:
If you need them to drive, you probably will want them so that you can properly admire our incredible views. We have special goggles that will fit over your glasses. Please inform your instructor if you are wearing contacts so that he can ensure your goggles fit extra tightly. Download istat menus for mac. Bringing an extra pair of contacts is a great idea- they're usually fine but occasionally one gets lost.
Shoes:
Sneakers that lace up are perfect. Heavy boots, flip flops, loafers, high heels and other types of footwear are not. If you wouldn't run in them, don't wear them.
Friends and family:
Ordinarily we would love for your friends and family to come watch you glide in for landing. However, due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, we are discouraging large groups of spectators, especially those who are gathering from different regions. We appreciate you keeping your group size small- please, no more than 2 spectators per jumper. Please read our Covid-19 update for more information.
AVAILABILITY
We skydive Wednesday through Monday from 9 AM to around 4 PM, weather allowing. Please give us as much notice as possible for your reservation, especially if you have a limited window to skydive. The beautiful summer months are upon us and prime spots are going fast. A $39 per person deposit is required with all reservations. Same-day reservations and walk-ins will be accepted only if there is room on the schedule, and group discounts are not available. Firefox password manager.
Please call or text to check conditions before you start your journey to the dropzone! If the weather isn't suitable for skydiving, you can reschedule for another day.
Allow 2-3 hours on a weekday and 3-4 hours on a weekend to complete your skydive. If you are a group of more than two people, you will need to go up in consecutive loads which will add time to your experience. Please arrive 5-10 minutes before your scheduled appointment. For your own wellness, be well rested and well hydrated!
SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
For safety reasons and as a courtesy to others, your cooperation on the following will be appreciated.
- Face masks are required while indoors and while within 6 feet of others at the airport.
- Alcohol may not be consumed anywhere on the airport during jumping hours.
- Controlled substances are prohibited at all times. No alcohol or drugs may be consumed within 8 hours of your skydive. If we suspect you are under the influence, we reserve the right to refuse you service and retain your deposit.
- Smoking is not permitted in all buildings, near aircraft or fuel sources, or in the parachute packing area. Once you are wearing your skydiving harness, no smoking is allowed. No vaping is allowed indoors.
- Well-behaved, leashed, dog-friendly dogs are welcome, but you must bring a non-skydiving friend to stay with them at all times. Do not bring a dog and expect to leave him or her in the car while you skydive. Don't forget the poop bags!
- Most of the above also applies to children. Skydiving is an adult sport, so if you must bring your children please bring a dedicated child-minder to be responsible for them at all times.
SKYDIVING RISKS
Modern equipment and training techniques have helped increase the safety of skydiving but, like any other high adventure sport, a certain amount of risk exists that cannot be eliminated. You must assume responsibility for yourself, and for decisions regarding your safety. You will be required to sign an assumption of risk agreement before you will be allowed to participate in skydiving.
Parachuting is a high-risk activity which may cause or result in serious injury or death. Skydive Finger Lakes does not carry insurance of any kind to cover you for injuries, property damage or other losses while you are on the premises, flying in the aircraft, or skydiving.
